Novartis wins “Most Valuable Patient Initiative or Service,” with Programa Pro-Memoria, a patient-centric service for Alzheimer’s.

Novartis beat competition from sophisticated entrants including Eli Lilly and Sandoz to win the ‘Most Valuable Patient Initiative or Service’ award, a category that recognizes genuine patient-centric innovation.

The inaugural eyeforpharma Latin America Awards 2015 reflect eyeforpharma’s mission to celebrate the organizations and people who are driving pharma forward beyond a product-focused sales approach towards thoughtful engagement with customer value.

Novartis’ project Programa Pro-Memoria embodies these values, by providing support to patients and caregivers going through the challenging transition to managing Alzheimer’s disease, a chronic condition.

Although known to be a very complex disease to manage, HCP’s are currently far too time-pressured to inform the patient with essential information to manage the emotional and physical burden of the condition. Moreover, due to the range of issues involved from behavioral questions, to physical space adaption or treatment administration, they may not have the complete suite of expertise to give full support.

Programa Pro-Memoria tackles this challenge by combining education materials that cover these issues for the patient, along with a library of video resources for caregivers on sustaining quality of life. These resources are reinforced with telephone medical advice delivered by specially trained nurses, to tackle this issue. Engagements are structured to follow the progression of treatment, and by visually summarizing expertise from neurology, psychiatry, geriatrics, physiotherapy, art therapy, nursing, gerontology and nutrition, it delivers a powerful cross-disciplinary support system to the patient.

Andrea Listo Couto a product manager with Novartis Brazil described the services, saying,“The objective of the Pro-Memoria program is to bring benefits directly to our main clients. With information on the treatment or on the illness itself, a well-informed patient and caregiver will achieve a better quality of life and will help the doctor.”

Although in its inaugural year, category winners managed to stand out in a pool of over 60 entrants from across Latin America. Reflecting the competition’s patient-centric values, patient leaders joined industry executives to assess project value in a competitive judging process.
