Data for the list was obtained from SEC documents and surveys sent to approximately 1,000 independent Internet marketplaces worldwide. Markets were ranked based on 3rd quarter 2000 revenues.

The rankings were developed by Jupiter Media Metrix, a provider of Internet measurement and analysis services. Data for the list was obtained from SEC documents and surveys sent to approximately 1,000 independent Net Markets worldwide, and ranks the markets based on their 3rd quarter 2000 revenue.

VerticalNet, which hosts paintandcoatings.com for Eastman Chemicals, came in 2nd on the list, followed by Ventro at 4th. Ventro, which is in the process of shutting down its founder Chemdex, also runs Industria Solutions, which it formed with DuPont last year.

In addition, SciQuest, a builder and operator of private marketplaces for research enterprises, ranked 7th, Testmart, a provider of commerce applications for precision equipment industries, was listed at 9th and BulkDrugs.com, serving buyers and sellers of products and services for the production of pharmaceuticals, made a showing at 14th.

Third quarter revenues used in the rankings included VerticalNet at $36.8 million, Ventro at $28.7 million and SciQuest at $19.7 million. Revenues dropped off dramatically for most of the other companies making the list, including Testmart at $3.8 million and BulkDrugs.com with $1 million in revenue, highlighting the fact that many of the marketplaces have yet to secure adequate revenues to break even.
