Microcosm Technologies and Sandia National Labs form MEMS technology alliance

Microcosm provides software, engineering, consulting services and manufacturing support for the development of MEMS for communications and biotechnology applications. Sandia National Laboratories is a multi-program DOE (Department of Energy) laboratory, operated by a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin.

Under the terms of the agreement, Microcosm will facilitate the transfer of Sandia's MEMS technology, representing an investment of over $60 million in the last six years, to the commercial sector. . Sandia will license much of its MEMS technology to Microcosm and provide prototype manufacturing capability to Microcosm customers at its 30,000 square foot Class 1 facility.

Commercial companies looking to Sandia for optical MEMS design and access to commercial fabrication can now use us to expedite their success, said Michael Jamiolkowski, President and CEO of Microcosm. RF wireless and biotechnology MEMS products are lagging behind optical MEMS by only 6-12 months. Microcosm will bring the Sandia assets to bear on these segments as well.

We are interested in helping insert our advanced MEMS technology into a variety of applications, including optical switches and biotechnology devices, said David Williams, Sandia's Director of Microsystems Science, Technology and Components.
